Possible options for how to unscrew the lamp base from the socket. Electric socket types, device, connection and repair The light bulb scrolls in the socket

Types, device, connection and repair

Is an electrical installation product used for detachable connection of light bulbs and other artificial light sources to electrical wiring.

The electric socket is an integral part of any lamp or chandelier and often performs the task of not only transmitting electric current, but also the holder of the lampshade, shade, other aesthetics and lighting control devices.

Types, marking and technical characteristics
electric cartridges

According to the principle of operation, all electric cartridges are arranged in the same way and differ only in overall dimensions, material from which they are made and design.

The body of an electric cartridge is usually marked with its technical characteristics. If they are not indicated, then you can find them out from the table by the connecting dimensions of the lamp base.

Table of types of popular electric cartridges
for connecting artificial light sources to the network

Electric sockets according to the method of connecting lamp caps are available in two varieties: screw type E and pin type G.

Electric threaded lamp holders are covered by GOST R IEC 60238-99, according to which three types of sockets for 220 V mains are produced. E14 - called a minion in everyday life, E27 and E40 - for street lamps.

For pin sockets for lamps, GOST R IEC 60400-99 applies, which normalizes the technical requirements for sockets of the type: G4, G5.3, G6.35, G8, GR8, G10, GU10, G10q, GR10q, GX10q, GY10q, G13, G20, GX23, G24, GX24, GY24, G32, GX32, GY32, GX53, 2G7, 2G11, 2G13, Fa6, Fa8 and R17d, designed to operate in a 220V network. contact holes for installing lamp posts.

As you can see, according to GOST, the range of electric cartridges is quite wide, therefore, the table lists only popular types that are most often installed in chandeliers and lamps for lighting rooms and streets.

G4-G10 5 60 Plug-in sockets G4, G5.3, G6.35, G8, G10 are usually installed in luminaires for connecting small-sized low-power halogen and LED LED lamps. The number after the letter G indicates the distance between the contacts of the holder
G9 5 60 Contacts in the G9 socket are made in the form of grooves, designed for connecting halogen and LED lamps, having a base with flat contacts in the form of a loop
GU10 5 50 The GU10 pin chuck is similar in application to the G4-G10 with a pin spacing of 10 mm. Its peculiarity is the increased diameter of the pins of the lamp base at the ends, due to which the base in the lamp holder is installed with clockwise rotation and securely fixed
G13 4 80 The G13 plug-in socket is designed for connecting linear fluorescent and LED lamps. Its distinctive feature is paired use and the need, after installing the lamp in the slot of the socket, turn it around the axis by 90 °
GX23 2 75 Plug-in two-pin socket GX23 is designed to connect U-shaped fluorescent and cylindrical LED lamps
G24 2 75 The G24 plug-in four-pin socket is designed for connecting U-shaped fluorescent and cylindrical LED lamps. The number 24 represents the distance between opposite pins on the diagonal
2G7 2 50 Plug-in four-pin socket 2G7 is designed to connect U-shaped fluorescent and cylindrical LED lamps
GX53 5 50 The modern GX53 cartridge is similar in design to the GU10 with 53mm pin spacing. Its peculiarity is its small thickness, which is important for installing LED lamps in stretch and suspended ceilings.

In the table, the maximum load current and the power of the connected lamps are reference and depend on the material from which the cartridge is made. For example, ceramic sockets, unlike plastic ones, can withstand more current and allow the connection of more powerful lamps.

In Chinese chandeliers, there are non-standard electric cartridges E27, designed to screw in two, three or more bulbs at once.

The cartridge for three bulbs is arranged and connected as follows. There are holes in the contacting plates, and you can connect the wires to them with screws and nuts M3, if you have a soldering iron at hand, you can connect the wires to the plates by soldering. The red arrow indicates the plate to which you need to connect the phase wire. The zero wire is connected to the point of direction of the blue arrow. The dotted blue line shows the connection between contacts. This jumper can be omitted, since the plates will be connected to each other through the base of the screwed-in light bulb, in the photo there is a green line. But then, if the right lamp is not screwed in, then the supply voltage will not be supplied to the left lamp either.

The device and principle of operation of the electric cartridge

Consider the design of an electric cartridge using the example of the widespread Edison threaded cartridges of the E series.

The cartridge consists of three main parts. The outer cylindrical body, in which the threaded sleeve with Edison thread, the bottom and the ceramic insert is fixed. There are 2 brass contacts and threaded fixing strips to transfer current from suitable conductors to the lamp base.

Here is the E27 cartridge, completely disassembled into its component parts.

The photo clearly shows how the brass contacts touch the lamp base. The photo on the right shows how the current is transmitted when the brass contacts are attached to the ceramic insert.

In ancient times, when payment for electricity was taken for the number of light bulbs and sockets in an apartment, a device popularly called a "crook" was widely used.

The adapter cartridge, which you see in the photo, was screwed into the electric cartridge. On the one hand, it has an external thread like a light bulb, and on the other - an internal thread, like an ordinary cartridge. This rogue had two brass pipes mounted, like a socket. The crook allowed any electrical appliances to be connected to the chandelier. You can make such a crook yourself from an ordinary electric cartridge.

Methods for fixing electric cartridges
in chandeliers and lamps

When replacing or repairing faulty electrical cartridges in chandeliers and lamps, they have to be removed. To do this, you need to know how the cartridge is attached to the base of the chandelier.

The cartridge is mounted in chandeliers and lamps, as a rule, for the bottom. There is a thread in the hole for entering the wire into the cartridge. E14 - M10 × 1. The E27 can have one of three: M10 × 1, M13 × 1 or M16 × 1. Luminaires can be suspended directly on an electrical wire and on a metal tube of any length and shape with a threaded end.

Fastening the electric holder in the luminaire
for the lead wire

Fastening the cartridge to the lead wire without additional fastening is not permissible. A plastic sleeve with a hole in the center for the passage of the electric wire is screwed into the bottom, in which a fixing plastic screw is provided.

After connecting the wires to the contacts of the cartridge and its assembly, the wire is clamped with a plastic screw. Often, decorative elements of lamps and parts for fixing the plafond are also fixed with a sleeve. Thus, the reliability of the connection of the electric socket, the suspension of the lamp and the fixing of the plafond are ensured. Photo report on how I attached the cartridge to the lead wire when making a sconce for the hallway. A special wire with increased mechanical strength is used.

Fastening the electric holder in the chandelier to the tube

Fastening an electric cartridge to a metal tube is the most common, as it allows you to hang heavy shades and gives room for design imagination. Additional nuts are often screwed onto the tube and with the help of them, any chandelier fittings, decorative caps, and the shades themselves are attached directly to the tube. The entire load is no longer carried by an electric cartridge, but by a metal tube. The wire for connecting the cartridge is passed inside the tube.

There are electric holders, which have a thread on the outer part of the cylindrical body, onto which you can screw the lampshade ring and use it to fix the shade or other design element and direction of the light flux.

Fastening the electric chuck with a sleeve

In table lamps and wall lamps, electrical holders are often secured with metal or plastic tubular sleeves to sheet metal parts. This mounting method expands the possibilities of the luminaire designers, since it is enough to drill a hole in any part of the part made of sheet material and fix the cartridge with a sleeve.

Repeatedly it was necessary to repair lamps with such a fastening of an electric cartridge with plastic bushings due to its deformation. From heating by an incandescent light bulb, the plastic was deformed, and the electric cartridge began to dangle.

Replaced the molten metal sleeve. Took from a variable resistor type SP1, SP3. They have an M12 × 1 fastening thread. Please note that the thread can be different. The fact is that the connecting thread of E27 cartridges is not standardized, and each manufacturer of the cartridge made the thread at its discretion. If you decide to use a bushing from a resistor, then before breaking the resistor, be sure to check if the thread fits the cartridge. The resistor is completely disassembled and the sleeve is removed from the plastic base.

Fastening an electric holder in a chandelier
with screwless terminals

The fastening of an electric cartridge with screwless contact clamps is somewhat different from the traditional fastening due to the fact that the connection of the case to the bottom is carried out using two latches, and not a thread.

First, the bottom is screwed onto a threaded tube in the chandelier, then wires are tucked into the cartridge, and finally the cylindrical body snaps into the bottom. In the photo, the latches at the bottom are broken off, with such a malfunction the chandelier came to me for repair. Such a cartridge can be repaired, the repair technology is described in the article below.

Therefore, if you have to change such a cartridge in a chandelier, in order not to spoil the wires, first use a screwdriver to slide the latches to the sides, thereby freeing the case from the bottom.

This photo shows a cartridge with screwless contact clamps installed during a chandelier repair to replace a failed cartridge. In this chandelier, the cartridge also performs a fastening function, fixes a decorative metal cup, to which a glass shade adjoins in the assembled chandelier.

Repair of electric cartridges

E-series electric cartridges can be successfully repaired as they can be disassembled. In G series chucks, the parts are riveted and have to be replaced with new ones in case of breakage.

Repair of a collapsible electric cartridge E27

If the light bulbs often start to burn out in the lamp or the light bulbs begin to change the brightness of the glow during operation, then one of the reasons, in addition to poor contact in the switch or junction box, is poor contact in the electric socket. Sometimes at the same time, when the lamp is turned on, the cartridge begins to emit a specific buzzing sound, in addition, the cartridge may smell badly of smoke. This is not difficult to verify. It is enough to unscrew the bulb and look into the socket. If the contacts have turned black, then you need to clean them. Poor contact at the point where the cartridge is connected to the wires can also cause blackening.

For a high-quality repair of an electric cartridge, you need to completely disassemble it, check the reliability of the connection of the wires and clean the brass contacts to a shine. Sometimes they need to be bent a little towards contact with the lamp base.

Sometimes, when you try to unscrew a light bulb, its bulb comes off from the base. In this case, you need to try to unscrew the base remaining in the cartridge by unscrewing the cylindrical body of the electric cartridge, holding it by the bottom. If the case cannot be unscrewed, then you can try to grab the lamp base by the edge with pliers and thus turn it out.

Repair of a collapsible electric cartridge E14

The five-horn chandelier had to be repaired, in which only two bulbs were shining. The chandelier was old, Soviet-made with collapsible E14 cartridges with screw fastening of wires.

The chandelier was used for many years with incandescent bulbs and as a result of the high temperature and loosening of the wires, they oxidized and burned at the screw clamping points.

The screws stuck in the thread and it was not possible to unscrew them with a screwdriver. I had to use pliers and as a result, in one of the cartridges, the fastening part broke off to fix the wire from the side contacts of the cartridge. There was no such cartridge at hand for replacement and had to figure out how to repair it.

To do this, the fastening part of the contact was screwed in the screw all the way and a piece of copper wire previously coated with tin-lead solder was inserted, as shown in the photo.

After assembly, the place where the copper wire was installed was filled with a large drop of solder using a soldering iron. After the repair, the electric cartridge has become even more reliable than it was before.

For prevention, all five cartridges were tested and the contacts were cleaned with sandpaper. The wires were loosened, the burnt ends were bitten off, the insulation stripped off and tinned with solder. But one electric cartridge was caught, in which when unscrewing the screws, their heads fell off.

He repaired the cartridge using soldering, soldering the current-carrying conductors to the place of the broken screws. Now the connection quality will be maintained for many years.

After such maintenance and repair, the chandelier will last for more than a dozen years, especially since LED filament bulbs have now been screwed into the sockets.

with screwless terminals

When renovating the apartment, the neighbor had to remove the chandelier from the ceiling. When she unscrewed the union nuts from the electric cartridges with screwless contact clamps to remove the plafonds, then all the cylindrical parts of the cartridges detached from the bottoms and hung on the wires. The chandelier only hung for six years with incandescent bulbs. It became apparent that the heat had made the plastic brittle and the latches snapped off. I decided to repair the electric cartridges.

First, I sawed off the remnants of the latches to the level of the pads in the cylindrical base of the electric cartridge. In the photo on the left there is a broken latch, and on the right is a fitted to the required size.

The new latches were made of 0.5 mm thick sheet brass. A cut-off strip of brass with a width equal to the width of the broken off latch was bent to the shape shown in the photograph. The latch can be made from any sheet metal such as iron or aluminum.

The curved side of the strip was brought into the bottom of the cartridge from the side of the rounded part. After that, a straight section of the strip was folded around the remaining holder of the broken latch, as shown in the photo.

After installing the homemade latches, the bottom of the cartridge was screwed onto a decorative tube in the chandelier.

After connecting the electric leads to the cylindrical part of the cartridge, it was fixed on the bottom with the help of new latches. The self-made latches did the job perfectly, holding the cylindrical part of the cartridge firmly. Now the latch will never break off.

Very often people are faced with such a problem: a light bulb in a lamp or chandelier has ceased to burn, and its replacement does not work. The reason for this was the following factor: the cartridge itself was out of order. In this case, it can be changed, and the operability of the lighting device will be restored.

The main reasons for replacing the cartridge

Failure of the cartridge is quite common not only in Chinese products, but also in more expensive and high-quality lamps. This can happen not only due to a factory defect in the product, but also become a consequence of the design features of the lamp.

From the high temperature inside the dome, the cartridge is deformed. This cartridge must be replaced.

For example, in a sealed luminaire, the temperature inside a glass bulb is very high, which leads to a rapid failure of not only the lamp, but also the cartridge, and the supply wires can also melt. In Soviet chandeliers or lamps, this element can crumble simply "from old age", having exhausted its resource.

In such cases, in order to restore the working capacity of the lamp, you need to change the cartridge, which can be done independently.

In addition, a common reason for changing chandelier cartridges is the desire to switch to more modern and economical LED light sources. Such lamps are most often produced with a small base of the E14 standard and they do not fit a regular lamp holder.

All sockets have the same design and differ only in the diameter of the thread for screwing in the lamp. When purchasing new products, make sure they have the same markings as the lamps.

Changing the cartridge: work progress

After all the reasons have been considered, the material has been purchased, you can proceed to consider the practical side of the issue of how to replace the cartridge in the chandelier. The given step-by-step instructions will allow you to independently perform all the manipulations:

  1. First of all, you need to protect yourself: relieve tension from the chandelier. To do this, the entire apartment is de-energized or the automatic machine responsible for the lighting group is turned off (depending on the configuration of the switchboard);
  2. After that, remove the decorative cover from the chandelier, which covers the electrical connection, as well as the place where the lamp is attached to the ceiling. We make sure that there is no voltage on the contacts: we check them with an indicator or probe;
  3. Now you can safely remove the chandelier. You can change the cartridge without removing the lamp, but practice shows that it is very inconvenient: hands quickly become numb and the process is delayed;
  4. To get to the cartridge, you need to remove the lampshade. It is better to remove them all so as not to damage them during operation (even if it is necessary to change one). For the same reason, you need to unscrew all the bulbs.

Before you remove the chandelier, you need to remember, and it is better to sketch the connection diagram so that when reconnected, all the lights turn on correctly.

If the reason for removing the lamp is an inoperative cartridge, you can try to repair it. To do this, you need to disassemble and inspect the contacts that are under the twist-off cover:

  • Quite often, copper contact plates bend, oxidize and even rust (in damp rooms). Such contacts must be cleaned with sandpaper or a file. If necessary, gently bend the contacts so as not to short-circuit them;
  • The next step is to inspect the contact screws that are located on the back of the ceramic bottom. For this, the base is carefully pulled back, the screws are inspected, if necessary, cleaned and tightened;
  • Now you can assemble the socket and screw the lamp into it, and insert the ends of the chandelier wires into the carrier. If the light bulb works, the repair was successful.

If the light bulb does not light up or the original purpose was to install new elements, then you should proceed as follows:

  1. We de-energize the chandelier, then disassemble the cartridge: as in the case of the repair, we need to get to the contact screws, which can be completely unscrewed to remove the ceramic bottom;
  2. Now it remains to remove the base of the cartridge from the chandelier. There is no definite answer on how to do this. It all depends on the model and design of the luminaire: somewhere the base is held on separate bolts, and in some luminaires on latches or internal threads. The only thing that can be advised in this matter is not to rush, carefully examine the product and not make excessive efforts: the base should be removed relatively easily;
  3. Having removed the base of the old cartridge, in the same way we install a new element, we connect the wires;
  4. If necessary, change all other cartridges in the same order. After you figured out the design of the chandelier, the process will go much faster.

The chandelier is connected according to a pre-sketched diagram. If earlier the connection was twisted, it is better to install modern terminal blocks: this is faster, more reliable and safer.

If you find that the inside of the chandelier has worn or thin wiring, it must be replaced with a new wire of a suitable size. In this case, the original connection diagram should be observed and try to avoid entanglement of wires.

Summing up

As you can see, changing the cartridge in a lamp or chandelier is not as difficult a task as it might seem at first glance. It is important to show attention and patience here, because most parts and connections are small in size.

Now LEDs are widespread and popular, which are also used for household use. It is recommended that lighting manufacturers do not use standard 60-100 W incandescent bulbs and replace them with LED bulbs. Replacing the cartridge in the chandelier can be done by hand.
There is no doubt that, due to its excellent technical characteristics, such electrical equipment will be used everywhere very soon.

And the popularity of LEDs is not surprising, because they have undeniable advantages.

  1. Thanks to the use of the diode principle, electrical energy is used as efficiently as possible.
  2. High efficiency of LED lighting. This value is 10 times higher than the efficiency of a conventional incandescent lamp.
  3. Such lighting devices work for quite a long time - up to 100 thousand hours.

Therefore, after installing the LED, you will forget for a long time that you need to spend money and time to maintain or replace lighting fixtures.

Benefits and Uses of LED Bulbs.

However, it is not always easy to replace conventional incandescent bulbs with LEDs, because modern LED bulbs have dimensions that differ from conventional bulbs used in Soviet times. For this reason, it is necessary to replace the cartridge in the chandelier.

Varieties and marking of chandelier holders

Threaded electric holders are marked with the letter "E". The marking also indicates the diameter of the base (millimeters). The specification can be seen on all product housings.

The principle of operation of all cartridges is the same. They differ only in that they have different overall dimensions and different designs. The enterprises produce three types of cartridges, which are designed for 220 V in the electrical network, and have full compliance with the state standard:

  1. E14. This type of cartridge is used in order for the backlight to work in a microwave oven, refrigerator or table lamp. Usually the maximum current consumption for them is 2A (440 W).
  2. E27. Used for many luminaires. The maximum current consumption is 4A (880 W).
  3. E40. Cartridges of this type are used in street lighting and are rated for 16 A (3500 W).

How a standard cartridge works

A typical cartridge has several basic elements. The outer cylindrical body contains an Edison threaded sleeve. The cartridge also consists of a bottom and a ceramic insert. Conductors are suitable for the cartridge, from which the tone is transmitted through brass contacts in the amount of two pieces on the base of the lighting lamp.

To increase the safety of lamp operation, it is necessary to correctly connect the phase - to the central contact of the base. At the same time, the possibility that a person can touch the voltage phase with his hand is minimal.

The process of replacing the cartridge in the chandelier

Before performing work on replacing the cartridge in the chandelier with your own hands, you need to ensure electrical safety. For this purpose, in the electrical panel, the machines are turned off, which are responsible for supplying electricity to the chandelier. After that, the de-energized chandelier is removed, since if it is suspended from the ceiling, it will be inconvenient to replace the cartridge.

First you need to get close to the place where the wires are connected. This place is located under the ceiling - it is covered by the top cover of the chandelier with a protective cap. The electrical tape is removed in the place where the wires are connected, and the supply wire is carefully disconnected from the wires with which the chandelier is equipped.

All this work is carried out with extreme caution, since if the wiring was carried out in Soviet times, then aluminum wire was used for this. Since school, we all know the characteristics of aluminum - a brittle metal that is easy to break.

If you find a twisted connection, and the wires are copper and aluminum, then, replacing the cartridge, try to connect these wires in the chandelier with wago brand self-clamping terminal blocks.

How to properly disassemble the cartridge

Some novice or inexperienced electricians think that changing the holder in a chandelier is easy and simple, even if the chandelier is hanging from the ceiling. But, as can be seen from practice, in order for the working conditions to be more comfortable, it is necessary to remove the chandelier, then the work will be more organized, and you can complete it quickly.

Disassembly and replacement of an electric holder for a chandelier.

So, you remove the chandelier and start dismantling the cartridge. The cartridge is disassembled, and its wire is disconnected from the ceramic block. After that, the base of the holder must be separated from the chandelier. This is done in various ways, depending on how the base is attached. Different designs have different mounting methods.

How to disassemble an electric cartridge yourself.

Benefits of using the E14 cartridge

The most common method is to attach an electric cartridge to metal tubes. The connection in this way has become widespread because thanks to it the possibility of using a design solution is significantly expanded. Such a cartridge has the ability to hold heavy structures.

However, the entire load goes not to the cartridge, but to the metal tube. Often additional nuts are screwed onto it to give greater stability. This allows you to reliably attach any heavy shade to the holder or decorate a room with a variety of decorative caps.

It is necessary to pass a wire to the cartridge through the inner surface of the tube. In the case of a fairly old old wiring, there may be doubt that it is still reliable. Then it is necessary to replace the wiring. In this case, you need to remove the old wire from the tube by pulling a new one through it, consisting of two cores.

How to install LED lamp holder

Install the electrical cartridge using the reverse order. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the insulation. Otherwise, you will be bothered by frequent short circuits.

How to connect a chandelier using wago terminal blocks

After replacing the cartridge in the chandelier, you can start directly connecting it to the electrical network. When connecting wires, it is not recommended to use twisting - it is better to use connecting terminal blocks.

This method of connection is fast and convenient, no tools or additional insulating materials are required, and you will get a reliable contact. Used in a variety of lamps.

How to remove the base from the chuck correctly

It is not always possible to get an incandescent lamp out of the socket without problems. Sometimes it happens that the base sits firmly in it, therefore, after you unscrew the light bulb, you still have a glass bulb in your hands. Without taking out the base, you will not be able to use the cartridge in the future, so you need to find a way out of this situation.

How to independently get the base from the electric chuck.

First you need to de-energize the chandelier. After that, the cylindrical part of the cartridge case is unscrewed. In this case, it is necessary to hold the cartridge from below. This will make it easier to remove the plinth.

If the top of the chuck still does not loosen, try pulling out the base with pliers. Grasp the edge of the base and turn it in the chuck. Experts recommend using a regular plastic bottle in such cases.

Above the fire, you need to melt its neck and place it in the base, which is stuck in the cartridge. After a short period of time, after the plastic has solidified, the base is unscrewed from the cartridge without much effort.

One of the main components of a chandelier or lamp is an electric cartridge, through which not only the lamp is fixed and current is transmitted to it, but also the shade and other elements for controlling the light source are attached.

The product design consists of elements:

  • cylindrical body;
  • internal threaded sleeve;
  • ceramic insert;
  • a pair of brass or copper contacts;
  • bottom;
  • fasteners.

The device of the product body excludes the possibility of electric shock when screwing in a light bulb. This is due to the fact that when the central contacts touch, the base is inside the cartridge.

Types of cartridges

Structurally, several types of them are distinguished by the method of attaching the bulbs:

  1. Threaded screw (incandescent lamp twists inward). They are used for standard incandescent lamps.
  2. Pin (fastening is carried out by means of lugs or pins located on the outer surface of the product). Used for fluorescent, halogen and.

The material used for the manufacture of the case is:

The principle of operation of all cartridges is identical, the differences are only in size and design. All products are designed for operation in a 220V power grid.

There are the following types of them (for designation, the value "E" with a number is used, where the number corresponds to the diameter of the sleeve):

  1. E5 and E10. They are rarely used due to the consumption of a considerable amount of current with insignificant light output.
  2. E14. Small size product, used with decorative lamps, so-called "minions", of identical diameter. Their power does not exceed 60 watts.
  3. E27. The most used threaded socket for use with conventional, fluorescent, LED and halogen lamps.
  4. E40. This type is intended for street lighting where large powerful lamps are used.

Cartridge selection

When choosing this product, first of all, you should give preference to a well-known and proven brand.

To avoid mounting difficulties, the design of the new socket must match the type of product previously used in the chandelier. It is better to give preference to a ceramic product due to its reliability during operation.

Basic selection requirements:

  • the power of the lamp to be connected;
  • diameter corresponding to the type of chuck;
  • marking;
  • parameters: dimensions, power;
  • the price should not be too low.

The cost depends on many factors, in particular the type of product and its manufacturer. Today the market provides the consumer with a wide selection of both Russian and imported brands.

The price range is quite large:

  1. E27 type:
    • domestic production - 25 rubles;
    • China - 45 rubles;
    • Italy - 130 rubles.
  2. E14 type:
    • domestic production - 20 rubles;
    • China - 20 rubles;
    • Italy - 90 rubles.
  3. For halogen lamps:
    • domestic production - 15 rubles;
    • China - 30 rubles;
    • Italy - 150 rubles.

How to change the cartridge in a chandelier

Replacing the product is not difficult and does not require experience in the field of electrical engineering, however, it requires caution and adherence to all rules and recommendations.

Reasons for replacement

First of all, the need to change the product is indicated by the non-incandescence of the lamp when the switch is activated. This is due to rusting of the liner or center contact. As a rule, clearing has no positive effect.

Replacement is required in case:

  1. Cracks and other defects on the outer part of the case;
  2. When the internal elements come into contact, a short circuit occurs.
  3. Exit from the working state.
  4. The service life is 5 years.

Required materials and tools

In the process, you will need:

  • replacement product;
  • terminal blocks for connecting electrical wires;
  • indicator mini-tester (screwdriver);
  • insulating tape;
  • construction knife with replaceable blades.

Step by step guide to replace

Replacing the cartridge in the ceiling lamp is performed in the following sequence:

Place the chandelier on a table or other convenient surface, disassemble it, removing all the shades and unscrewing the bulbs so as not to break

Checking work

After attaching the chandelier to the ceiling, a lamp is screwed into the socket and an electric current is supplied. If the replacement work is done correctly and all contacts are connected, then the lamp will glow.

If, after replacing the product, any malfunctions are found (lamp blinking or burnout), you should find their causes. Alternatively, this may be an incorrect connection of the current supply wires.

  1. Replace without de-energizing the room, is strictly prohibited, it often leads to tragic consequences.
  2. If a problem is found in the main it is necessary to make a complete or partial replacement.
  3. Sometimes the cartridges initially have branch wires, so when connecting different types of wires, for example, aluminum acts as the main one, and copper comes from the lighting device, it is advisable to use special terminal blocks for connection. If there are none, the wires should be connected, twisted and covered with insulating tape.
  4. Before removing the chandelier, you should remember or sketch the connection diagram, which will exclude the possibility of incorrect connection.
  5. If the reason for removing the ceiling light is a loose cartridge, you can try to repair it. Often times, brass plates will break off, oxidize or rust. In this case, they can be cleaned with a sanding paper. You should also inspect the contact fasteners under the ceramic insert. If necessary, clean and tighten them. After a thorough inspection, the cartridge is assembled and the lamp is screwed into it, the ends of the lamp wires are placed in the carrier. Correct repair will result in light emission from the lamp.
  6. Sometimes it is not possible to remove the incandescent lamp from the cartridge - the base is jammed, and when the lamp is unscrewed, only the glass bulb is removed. In order for the cartridge to be used in other chandeliers in the future, it is necessary to unscrew the cylindrical element of the product body, holding it by the lower part. If these manipulations do not give a positive result, the base is allowed to be unscrewed by means of pliers, taking its edge and turning it in the chuck.

The most common lamp failure is lamp burnout. First of all, this is typical of cheap incandescent lamps, however, even high-quality fluorescent and LED lamps fail over time. Such a malfunction is easy to detect and eliminate, but it is more difficult to deal with a cartridge breakdown. We will tell you why it can occur, how to diagnose a malfunction and how to change the cartridge in the chandelier.

The main reasons for replacement

It should be noted that replacing the cartridge is not always associated with the repair of the chandelier. Sometimes it is necessary to change the type of socket to be able to work with certain types of lamps or to improve the aesthetics of the luminaire.

The following signs serve as a technical indication for replacement:

  • flickering of light that does not go away after replacing the lamp with a similar one;
  • hum or crackle in the included chandelier;
  • the smell of burning;
  • complete failure when current is no longer supplied to the lamp.

The most common cause of the listed breakdowns is a manufacturing defect. Voltage surges in the household network, temperature drops, high air humidity can also significantly reduce the life of the lamp.

Often, malfunctions occur due to overload, when a lamp is installed in the cartridge, the power of which exceeds the maximum allowable for this type of cartridge.

Required tools and materials

The list of materials and tools depends on the design of a particular luminaire. The minimum set includes:

  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • stationery knife;
  • insulating tape.

For a more professional performance of work, a screwdriver with replaceable bits or even a screwdriver, a soldering iron with solder and flux, heat shrink tubes, terminal blocks are useful.

You may need a sealant or gel adhesive to seal the shade.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the cartridge

The chandelier is dismantled from the ceiling, observing the following safety rules. For disassembly, it is usually sufficient to remove the device from the hook or mounting plate and disconnect the wires. The wires connected by twisting are disconnected manually or with pliers, but the terminal blocks will have to be loosened with a screwdriver. Then I do the following:

  1. Unscrew the lamps from all the sockets, remove the shades and other fragile parts.
  2. Unscrew the top of the cartridge by rotating it counterclockwise. Depending on the model of the chandelier, it may be necessary to hold the lower part with pliers or preliminary dismantling of the contacts.
  3. Take out the ceramic base of the cartridge, remove the wires or terminals from its contacts.
  4. A new cartridge is being disassembled. Connect its central contact with the "phase", and the side contact with "zero".
  5. Mount the base of the new cartridge on the chandelier and screw the upper part onto it.
  6. Assemble the chandelier in reverse order.

This completes the replacement of the cartridge. Now all that remains is to return the lamp to the ceiling and connect the wires, carefully insulating the joints.

Precautions

Before carrying out any work, the chandelier must be de-energized. At the same time, it is not enough just to change the position of the switch - it is better to protect yourself from all accidents by unscrewing the plugs or turning off the safety toggle switch.

Do not start disassembling the chandelier immediately after turning it off - the lamps must cool completely.

Take special care when working with glass and ceramic parts to avoid injury from splinters. Thick work gloves will not interfere here. If the luminaire is dismantled and installed on a plaster ceiling, wear protective goggles. But most importantly - do not save electrical tape, eliminate any possibility of a short circuit both between the wires and one of the wires to the chandelier body.

Replacing the cartridge in a chandelier is a relatively simple procedure that requires the performer to be attentive, accurate and careful. If you follow the instructions and follow all safety measures, then there will be no problems.
