The Saturnalia archetype has nothing in common with the joyful Dionysian mysteries of the sun, although outwardly they may have certain similarities. Saturnalia is much closer to the image of a feast during a plague, when the last impulse of life strives to spill out in the remaining minutes before inevitable death. Before death, everything is allowed - drugs, sodomy, orgy, because through this life pours out in its last drop.

The French call orgasm a petite death. This proximity of the sexual and mortal, noticed in this metaphor, has its manifestation in two arcana - the thirteenth and fifteenth. Death and the Devil, Nun and Ain are complementary archetypes, in which the sexual is associated with death, but if Death relates to the feminine principle as the eroticism of death, seductive, enchanting and dissolving, then the eroticism of the devil has a different nature - it is rough masculine energy, in the last impulse to rushing at breakneck speed towards the ecstasy of self-destruction. The devil is a phallus who wants to pour out his life-seed into the womb of death and thereby give new life. Here it is useful to analyze the symbolism of one of Crowley’s poetic masterpieces, which he himself correlated with the Devil lasso:

The Devil is associated with the archetype of the rebel, the rebel who does not even expect to win. His rebellion is the rebellion of a loner, obviously doomed to death, but this death is at the same time the culminating point of ecstasy. The devil is close to the Saturn principle of ancient tragedy, to a true understanding of which Nietzsche also turned. Nietzsche saw behind the external tragedy of the final death of the hero, a Dionysian frenzy, an experience of extreme fulfillment of life, which at its peak turns into death.

The image of a loner, opposing the world and ultimately dying, became widespread in all areas of art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Modern culture is replete with images of madmen who never look back, rushing towards an unprecedented goal and ultimately dying from the blow of the system against which they rebelled. For example, the main character in the films of Jean-Luc Godard or the hero of Antonione’s film “Zabryski Point”.

I twice had to encounter synchronicities that confirmed the correctness of my conclusions regarding the archetype of the Devil. Once, while at a rock concert with a girl who was as interested in the symbolism of Tarot in culture as I was, and listening to another musician, I whispered in her ear: “Here is an example of the manifestation of the “Devil” archetype. This kind of exchange of opinions is, in general, quite common for us, and by expanding the study of the Tarot to the study of the universe of the spirit, we achieve much more than the unfortunate narrow specialists with their strictly academic approach. So, the humor is that a few minutes after my phrase (I heard this group for the first time), in the next song, the chorus included the text: “I am the devil, I am Satan.”

This story repeated itself exactly after a very short period, already at my apartment concert. Listening to my guest passionately singing about the ecstasy of death and the beauty of decay, I again whispered to the same companion: “See - the devil again,” which, as if according to the script, was confirmed in the next song, where the main theme was playing cards with the Devil.

The Devil lasso is also associated with the problem of sadism, the desire to cause pain during sexual interaction.

In conclusion, it makes sense to cite the psychological aspect of the Ain path. According to the research of psychologist Stanislav Grof, the third stage of childbirth, when movement occurs along the birth canal, turns out to be closely correlated with the archetype of the Devil - at this stage, when ecstasy is mixed with pain, experiences associated with the Sabbath, the ecstasy of decay (volcanic ecstasy, as it is) are born called Grof), the appearance of disgusting and at the same time captivating images and experiences characteristic of sadomasochism. In this list it is not difficult to identify all the same signs of the fifteenth lasso.

The essence of the Arcana is that you need to accept your instincts and deeply explore your darkest and most animal side. It is not necessary to suppress passions: the most healthy way to free yourself from them is to channel them into creative activity that elevates the spirit and expands the boundaries of consciousness. Silent submission to one's own desires and pleasures can lead to both destruction and enlightenment. In modern interpretation, the Arcanum "Devil" is mainly considered a positive card. The instincts it expresses, or rather the hidden feelings which we are accustomed to designate by the term “subconscious,” are no longer regarded as a hostile force from which we must protect ourselves. They are rather associated with the “dark side” or “shadow”, which, however, are natural components of the human psyche.
