Tank Biathlon 2016, which took place at the Alabino training ground near Moscow, as part of international army games, ended in victory for the Russians. Together with the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, Oleg Sienko, General Director of Uralvagonzavod Corporation, presented the winners with medals and keys to modern UAZ Patriot cars.

The skill of controlling combat vehicles in the "Tank Biathlon 2016" was demonstrated by 18 teams from all over the world - these are the crews of Russia, Iran, Kuwait, Angola and other countries. The winner of the competition was selected based on the results of individual races and relay races. Tankers overcame ford, concrete walls, climbed on the escarp, hit targets.
Assessment of the T-72B3 Uralvagonzavod tank participants and spectators of the competition gave a high. “This is a trouble-free, combat-ready machine,” says the trainer of the Mongolian team, Gantsuh Erdenetsogsh. - The main advantage is reliability and simplicity. It can be easily driven and repaired if necessary. ”

“All stages of the T-72B3 are going well,” said Ivan Lagutin, communications chief of the mechanized battalion of the Republic of Belarus. “The best tanks are the tanks of the Uralvagonzavod.”
Ashton Mlindin, South Africa’s independent expert on military affairs, noted how UVZ military equipment can maneuver quickly and for a long time.
Satisfied were the newcomers to the competition - the crew of Azerbaijan. Coach and team captain Bakhtyar Mammadov and Rashat Atakshaev noted the successful modernization of the T-72A tank, for which they thank Uralvagonzavod. “The car has become stronger. A powerful motor, another radio station, an improved control system, which positively affects the accuracy of the hit. The tank is now more convenient. "

Participants of the competitions also noted the organization of work of the Uralvagonzavod at the biathlon. More than 30 specialists of the Uralvagonzavod were engaged in servicing cars and training crews. “Last year, we were not able to pass the ford,” says Colonel, head of the Serbian delegation, Dragan Boich. - This year there were no such problems. Now we have close cooperation with UVZ specialists. Each question that arises is resolved in 5-10 minutes. Without the employees of the corporation, our crew would not be able to proceed to the next stages. "
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation, Colonel General Oleg Salyukov thanks the Uralvagonzavod for cooperation and quality work. He drew attention to the fact that, compared with last year, technical support from the corporation has grown many times. “Until today, the Chinese tank has shown very good results. All crews perform on our equipment, except for the Chinese team - they are on their equipment, and they are superior in speed. Now we are ahead of them. ”
“This year, participants in the tank biathlon,” emphasizes Oleg Sienko, General Director of Uralvagonzavod Corporation, “have reached a more professional level. There are many worthy rivals, including the crews of Belarus, Kazakhstan, India, Venezuela, as well as a team from China who participated in their equipment. I hope that next year, at least, if not in the speeches, then in the demonstration performances, the crews of the UVZ corporation will perform.

“The armor is strong and our tanks are fast” - these famous lines from the “March of Soviet Tankers”, written back in 1938, have not lost their relevance even today when summing up the results of the International Tank Biathlon, held at the Alabine training ground near Moscow in the framework of the Army International Games 2016. Russian military specialists once again demonstrated their mastery of armored vehicles and won a well-deserved victory in the relay final, leaving behind the most experienced crews from China, Kazakhstan and Belarus. The intensity of the struggle at all stages of the competition sometimes surpassed the Brazilian Olympic passions, as evidenced by tens of thousands of spectators in the stands of the tankodrome (only about 25 thousand guests attended the final) and millions of television fans. The decisive battle was watched with great attention and undisguised excitement by the “founding father” of this military-applied sport, Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Army General Sergei Shoigu, chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov, hundreds of Russian and foreign military leaders and military experts.

The geography of the countries participating in the world tank biathlon championship (this status has long been assigned to Alabinsk competitions by Russian and foreign experts) this year has covered almost all continents. The official program was attended by crews from 17 countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Venezuela, Angola, Belarus, Iran, Azerbaijan, Zimbabwe, Armenia, Mongolia, India, Serbia, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Nicaragua, and Tajikistan. For comparison: teams from 4 countries participated in the races of 2013, in 2014 there were already 12, in 2015 there were 13 teams.

Each team consisted of 24 people, including the head of the team, four tank crews of 3 people (one spare crew), two coaches and a technical support department consisting of 6 specialists. Out of the competition, three veteran League crews representing DOSAAF of Russia and made up of reserve personnel took part in the races. By the way, in the framework of military training for citizens in reserve, it would be possible to recruit the best reservist teams for their subsequent participation in such competitions at the district, Russian and international levels. As one of the loyal fans of tank biathlon stated, in the recent past, an experienced mechanic driver of the famous Kantemirov’s division Artem Vorobyov: “We and our former colleagues are in constant contact, improving our tactical skills through virtual tank battles. If the opportunity presented itself, many of my former colleagues would have undergone real retraining and, I am sure, did not face their dirt ”at the training ground during the army competitions. In addition, almost all teams (except China and Belarus) performed on the most reliable T72B3 cars, presented by the host. “These tanks have been in service with us for more than 30 years and have not lost their combat readiness and demand, the deputy chairman of the public organization“ Officers of Russia ”of the Odintsovo district, Vladimir Marennikov, shares his opinion. The most important thing in these competitions is the cohesion of tank crews, mutual assistance, the ability to fire and lead the tank to the finish line. ”

It should be noted that not only the military personnel of the four Russian military districts, but also specialists of the Russian “defense industry” carefully prepared for the tank championship. By the efforts of the engineers of the Uralvagon-Zavod corporation, a new modification of the T-72 tank (or its "biathlon" version of the T-72B) was created specifically for the competition, the modernized T72-B3 model, which differs from serial models in increased reliability, increased engine power (up to 1130 l . s.), significant improvements in the chassis and tracks. A digital chassis control system was installed on the tank, providing automated control of the power plant, transmission and automatic gear shift modes, an additional aiming and fire control system, as well as advanced video viewing devices.

Both the Russian and foreign competitors, as well as independent military experts, praised the new version of the combat armored vehicle, which practically crashed at the Alabinsk training ground. “This is a trouble-free, combat-ready machine,” says the coach of the Mongolian team, Gantsuh Erdenetsogsh. The main advantage is reliability and simplicity. It can be easily driven, and if necessary, repaired. ” Coach and captain of the Azerbaijani team Bakhtyar Mammadov and Rashat Atakshaev have a similar opinion: “The car has become stronger. A powerful motor, another radio station, an improved control system, which positively affects the accuracy of the hit. The tank is now more convenient. " “All stages of the T72B3 go well,” said Ivan Lagutin, communications chief of the mechanized battalion of the Republic of Belarus. The best tanks are tanks of the Ural-Wagon Factory. ” South African independent military expert Ashton Mlynden emphasized the speed and the possibility of long-term maneuvering of the Russian machine.

Colonel General Oleg Salyukov, Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation, also spoke about the reliability of our tanks when summing up the relay: “Until today, the Chinese tank has shown very good results. All crews perform on our equipment, except for the Chinese team, they are on their own equipment, and they are superior in speed. Now we are ahead of them. ”

Chinese colleagues brought their own new product to the championship, a deeply upgraded Type 96B tank with an increased power plant and improved air supply system, a new transmission, as well as new tracked tracks. In official documents, the clearly declared underestimated engine power of the Chinese machine was 1000 hp. (according to experts, this figure does not match at least 200 positions). These innovations allowed the crews from the Middle Kingdom to develop simple cosmic speeds at the training ground. However, it was not without breakdowns in the final race, the tank of our main competitors lost one of the road wheels during the “comb”.

Partners from Belarus brought their upgraded version of the T-72, equipped with an SosnaU optoelectronic aiming system and a wind sensor, produced at the enterprises of the union state. The engine power of the tanks they represented did not exceed 840 hp, which, however, did not prevent the Belarusian tankers from leaving Chinese rivals behind at certain stages.

For reference: German Leopard 2A5, Leopard 2A6, Italian Ariete, Slovenian M-84 (modernized T-72) and American Abrams M1A2SEP take part in similar competitions of NATO countries. However, these competitions do not have a “biathlon” component and more resemble tactical maneuvers with training firing. And most importantly, they do not have the kind of sports, emotional intensity and team spirit that have been distinguishing international tank competitions held in Russia for several years now.

From the first meters of more than a sixteen-kilometer distance, the crew of the People's Republic of China burst forth trying to take advantage of the heavy-duty engine of their armored vehicles. The Russian team consisting of tank commander Senior Lieutenant Artyom Kirillov, driver-mechanic of Junior Sergeant Stepan Gavrilov representing the Western Military District, and gunner-operator Sergeant Konstantin Vertunov from the Eastern Military District are chasing, trying not only to catch up with the opponent, but also try to make a certain struck at a speedy section of the relay race determined by lot for our tankers.

Russian tank at the first firing line flanking cannon fire. The last shot, the exhalation of the regret of many thousands of spectators, is one miss. The Kazakh crew before this makes three unforgivable mistakes at once and becomes a temporary outsider of the race. The Chinese are sniper accurate.

The second shooting of Russians from an anti-aircraft machine gun. Artyom Kirillov, as befits an experienced and cold-blooded commander, strikes the “helicopter” and “ATGM” of a conditional enemy. But the Chinese are literally stepping on their heels. Both teams approach the third frontier almost simultaneously. Our coaxial machine gun shooting 3 precise hits. The main opponent unexpectedly “lost sight” one miss, a penalty circle and an almost minute lag during the transfer of the stage. Still others with a significant lag are Belarusians.

Separately, mention should be made of the new regulations for tank competitions. The championship was divided into three main stages: an individual race with the participation of all teams, the relay semifinal with 12 participants and the final relay race. In individual races 3 crews from each team took part. In the races with an interval of 12 minutes, 4 crews started, which were supposed to cover 3 laps of 35 km each with firing from the cannon with three standard artillery shots at 3 tank targets, from an anti-aircraft machine gun at a conventional helicopter and ATGM, from a coaxial machine gun at 3 conditional calculations manual anti-tank grenade launcher of the enemy. The results of the teams consisted of the total time for passing the distance and the accrued amount of penalty points.

According to the rules of the competition, 10 penalty points were awarded for each downed (touched) column (limiter) of obstacles, 30 for movement without reducing speed to 5 km / h for 510 meters before the escarp.

At a distance, the tankers had to overcome a series of serious artificial obstacles: the obstacle and maneuvering section, ford, rut passage in the cost center, barrow, fire lane, anti-tank moat with a passage, mock rim bridge, comb, scarp, slope.

The twelve teams that scored the most points in the individual race reached the relay semifinals.

The first individual races refuted the opinions of skeptics about the lack of competition in modern tank biathlon. Russian team with a result of 23 min. 18 sec expectedly, in her debut start, she was the first to finish, however, the Indian crew (2 minutes behind) ahead of their Kazakh counterparts, who were considered one of the favorites of the competition. In the third race, the team of Belarus excelled, but its result was 26 minutes. 58 p. was by no means a grandmaster. In the sixth race, another crew of the Union State was only 7 seconds ahead of tankers from Armenia. In the confrontation between Kazakh and Belarusian colleagues, the first to prevail with a confident two-minute margin. In the full-time confrontation between Russia and China in the 12th race, our colleagues won a landslide victory, showing an excellent time of 21 minutes. 3 pp., Remaining the record of the current championship.

According to the results of the team standings of individual races, the leadership of the People's Republic of China took the lead (two of its crews confidently located on the first lines of the podium), followed by Russia (3rd and 4th positions) and Kazakhstan, Belarus remained fifth, skipping ahead of the Indian team. The list of the twelve strongest closed the team of Angola.

The best Russian crew was a team assembled from representatives of the 39th separate Red Banner Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 68th Army Corps of the Eastern Military District, which received bronze awards.

“You should not despair, a veteran-white man, gray-haired, sitting next to him on a platform, reassured, not missing a single race. The Russians have always been strong in their team spirit. Every dog \u200b\u200bhas his day. After all, ahead of the relay! ”

From the chronology of the final of the tank relay

At the second stage, the Russian crew consisting of the tank commander, Senior Lieutenant Pavel Martyanov, the gunner-operator of Junior Sergeant Yevgeny Yazhgunovich and the driver-mechanic of Junior Sergeant Artem Ubenykh, representing the Eastern Military District, has a small handicap in front of the closest pursuer. But the Chinese team is absolutely the best in the individual races of the trio of “virtuosos of armored vehicles”. The Russians pass the high-speed section perfectly, but admit an unfortunate miss on the firing line; one tank target remains unaffected. Meanwhile, the Chinese are putting all three cannonballs precisely at the target and breaking out into the leaders.

But even the old woman is a bungle. Announced as a supertank of the Celestial Empire, Type 96B unexpectedly loses one of its track rollers when passing a comb. However, without waiting for a spare car, the Chinese continue to confidently lead the race, showing the world the margin of safety of their even partially damaged car. Belarusians, although with a big lag, hold the third position.

Shooting of Russians from an anti-aircraft machine gun and again one annoying miss. But the penalty loop can not be avoided, and the Chinese also suffered one failure at the firing line. However, the rivals are still ahead. A quick change of tank to a spare, and they again lead the race. Artem Ubiennykh squeezes the maximum out of his native “seventy-two”. Leading teams approach the third shooting range almost simultaneously. Yevgeny Yazhgunovich’s shots fall right on target. But Chinese snipers confirm their high qualifications.

There comes one of the climaxes of the Chinese race (new after a forced replacement) and Russian tanks at the same time breaking out into direct wide open space. The time has come for a real battle between drivers and motors. Artem Ubiennykh, using all the power of the unique brainchild of the Ural defense industry, classically bypasses the "Celestial Hope" on the left flank, breaking away a hundred and a half meters from a formidable pursuer. And the Chinese crew ... goes to the penalty loop. The jury found the damage to the tank the fault of the crew, and the time to replace it did not compensate.

The rules of this most spectacular stage of the competition provide for a tank battle of three crews from each team, changing in stages. Representatives of the four national teams start at the same time and pass four circles (35 km long), overcoming obstacles and hitting targets at three firing lines. The sequence of fire is determined by lot.

Each of the teams must overcome the section of the high-speed race, conduct flank firing from the cannon at three targets on the move, hit two targets from the anti-aircraft machine gun and three targets from the coaxial machine gun. Inaccurate shooting accrues penalties for each miss. An additional 500 meters of distance are punished by the errors of the driver. The requirements for the passage of the track are incredibly strict. The penalty circle is added to the crew in cases of stopping on the ford, rolling back when approaching the opposite shore or bypassing it; for reversing, stalling or bypassing the gauge bridge from the layout; for stopping at a barrow or a scarp; for grazing the side wall of the anti-tank ditch with a passage, leading to damage that does not affect the movement of the combat vehicle; for driving without speed reduction, stopping on an anti-tank ditch with a passage; for hitting a mine of a rut in a mine-explosive fence; for stopping on a slope; for movement with an open hatch and violation of the order of unloading weapons.

A more serious fine (two additional circles) is provided for violation of security measures: the beginning of movement or firing without the command of the chief judge; firing by crew with open hatches for lateral protective zones outside the line of opening and ceasefire; tank movement when crew members did not take their regular places; ammunition loading with the engine stopped.

In the relay race, the crew must demonstrate all their shooting skills and, in motion, hit 3 targets of the Tank with artillery fire (frontal simulation of armored vehicles at ground level with dimensions of 2.37x3.42 m at a distance of 1600 to 1800 m); knock out 3 RPG targets from a coaxial machine gun (simulating the calculations of an enemy’s manual anti-tank grenade launcher with dimensions of 0.85x0.85 m at a distance of 600 to 800 m); from the anti-aircraft machine gun hit the “Helicopter” target (frontal projection at a height of 12 m with dimensions 3.2x3.8 m at a distance of 800 to 1000 m) and the ATGM target (frontal projection of an anti-tank gun with dimensions of 1.1x1.5 m at a distance from 800 to 1000 m).

As experts expected, all the favorites of the competition at the stage of the semi-finals brilliantly coped with these difficult tasks. In the first run, the Chinese team outperformed their competitors without problems and showed a grand master result of 1 hour 45 minutes. 55 sec However, in the next four, our Belarusian friends surpassed this time by almost 4 seconds, leaving behind the national team of Kazakhstan, which was behind by more than three minutes. But the audience was most interested in the third race with the participation of the Russian team. And our tankers did not fail just 1 hour 39 minutes and it took them 50 seconds to overcome this super-heavy distance. For the entire 20 minutes they “brought” India's second team in the race. The stands applauded the skill of domestic crews. According to the results of the race, the former tankerkantemirov Artem Vorobyev, closely following the course of the competition: “Russian guys always harness longer, but they drive much faster. Affects cool army training. "Russian tankers have always been, are and will be the best in the world!” However, the victorious reports were still far away. Ahead is the most difficult relay final with the participation of the Chinese, Belarusian and Kazakh nationals craving for revenge.

From the chronology of the final of the tank relay

Our finisher in this dramatic race is the tank crew consisting of the commander of senior sergeant Alexei Cheban, gunner-operator of senior sergeant Alexander Tobodyakov and the mechanic-driver of junior sergeant Sergei Bronnikov (all represent the Eastern Military District). This well-coordinated “mechanized trio” (in the individual race, which remained below the prize-winners line, but took an honorable fourth place) went into the distance with an almost minute advantage over rivals from China. The third is the Belarusian tank crew.

The first Chinese firing from a coaxial machine gun, all the cartridges fall exactly on target. After passing through the high-speed section, the Russians also methodically and clearly shoot tank targets. Rivals once again almost simultaneously approach the second firing line. There comes a moment of truth for our shooters. Sergey Cheban with two well-aimed shots from an anti-aircraft machine gun hits two targets, but the Chinese gunner leaves no chance for the conditional enemy tanks. The “war of motors" begins again.

Starting to shoot from a coaxial machine gun, Alexander Tobodyakov must have felt terrible rivals resting on his back. But he did not flinch, as if he had hit all the targets. The shooting of the Chinese commander “helicopter” was shot down, the last target shot “ATGM” remains unaffected. The main rivals are sent to “unwind” the penalty loop. In the meantime, Russian biathletes are shaking their heads for their fourth victory in the history of this military-applied sport. The last mine barrage, the anti-tank ditch and the Russian crew, under the enthusiastic cries of the fans, burst into the tribune area, which became the world-famous Alabinsk test site. The best tankers of Russia “brought” to their closest rivals the Chinese team more than two minutes and almost 12 minutes ahead of the third team from Kazakhstan.

“Our team completed the task 100 percent. We have once again proved that Russia is a worthy rival, ”noted the commander of one of the crews, Pavel Martyanov, following the race. “There is no place for emotions at the training ground. Ideal discipline and team cohesion is the key to success. Everyone must act in concert, ”the other members of our victorious team supported their commander.

Russian tankers have once again confirmed the title of the best in their profession at major international competitions. At the closing ceremony of the Army International Games 2016, awards in this category were presented by Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu and Oleg Sienko, General Director of Uralvagonzavod Corporation. The winners, along with well-deserved medals, received the keys to modern UAZpatriot cars. Silver medals and valuable gifts were awarded to representatives of the Chinese team, “bronze” from Kazakhstan. Alexei Cheban and his comrades Alexander Tobodyakov and Sergey Bronnikov were recognized as the most harmonious crew.

Representatives of the Russian defense department, closely following the course of the competitions, gathered a lot of useful information for themselves, which will undoubtedly be used in compiling new requirements for instruction in combat training of combat arms and military branches, as well as types of weapons and military equipment. According to the head of the Main Directorate of Combat Training of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Ivan Buvaltsev, the alleged innovations are objectively determined by the experience gained during the International Army Games, and, in particular, the stages of tank biathlon. According to him, the new requirements for military training of military personnel have already planned a significant reduction in time for combat firing, as well as increased crew supply standards.

“Each of the tank biathlon competitions made adjustments to the“ Shooting Requirement Courses ”adopted for the tank units of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Viktor Murakhovsky, veteran of the tank troops, editor of Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, is sure. Competitions are far from real fighting. For example, you can’t see a tank shooting while driving at maximum speed, through swampy terrain, or highway traffic. But the clear regulatory requirements for passing the stages of the distance reveal other secrets of the specific preparedness of tank crews. The year before last, I was able to get acquainted with the summary data of the shooting teams of biathlon participants, and they turned out to be worse than “satisfactory”. It was after this that Sergei Shoigu demanded that his subordinates not save on ammunition. The intensity of using armored vehicles during various exercises has also increased. Today, none of them can do without tanks and their practical application. "

According to the expert, the development of new requirements is impossible without a comparative analysis of what is happening in other armies and how. In this regard, tank biathlon competitions are a unique opportunity not only to test themselves, but also to compare their methods with other armies.

According to Colonel-General Sergei Maev, who previously headed the Main Armored Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation: “An ordinary tank crew uses its equipment not more than 60%. The competitive moment is able to increase the effectiveness of its combat use to 8090%. Soldiers go to the vabank for the sake of victory. This point deserves analysis for making changes to combat training plans, creating new methods for training tank crews, and specifying firing rates. Only through direct comparisons can we understand the strengths and weaknesses, draw conclusions and make adjustments to our own combat training plans. ”

Participants of the competitions especially noted the technical side of their organization. More than 30 specialists of the Uralvagonzavod were engaged in servicing cars and training crews. “Last year, we were unable to go through the ford,” says Colonel, head of the Serbian delegation, Dragan Boich. There were no such problems this year. Each question that arose was resolved in 510 minutes. Without such help, our crew could not proceed to the next stages. "

Let's hope that future tank biathlon world championships, traditionally held in Alabino, near Moscow, will be even more representative, competitive and spectacular. Especially with teams from the North Atlantic Alliance. According to the organizers of the competition, since 2013 they have been inviting representatives of the NATO armed forces to fight at a tank training ground near Moscow, but they are stubbornly silent. Meanwhile, honest rivalry on Olympic principles with the leading Western powers could not only increase the level of international army games, but also help strengthen mutual understanding between peoples and ease international tension.

“The military must show their skills somewhere,” Army General Sergei Shoigu said at the closing ceremony of “Armi2016”. There are two places for this: one of them, as you know, is war. Another is our International Army Games. That is why I am absolutely convinced that their geography will grow. The number of teams this year is 2.5 times more than last year. About 3.5 thousand specialists of different professions arrived: pilots and sailors, reconnaissance and paratroopers, artillerymen and engineers, sappers and dog handlers, doctors, all those who are somehow engaged in military affairs, military affairs. I would like to thank you for that work, for the service aimed at ensuring the security of your countries. I would very much like for us to meet only on these fields, on the fields of such competitions. ”
